|Mets organization is presented with the cup at City Hall|
On Sunday morning the Mets were officially presented with "The Cup" by MLB commissioner Bud Selig. As is the new tradition, the winning team gets to select what Pepsi product goes in the cup. The Mets chose Pepsi Max (a diet beverage) to avoid any conflicts with New York City's new soda restrictions. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was on hand to make sure any soda drinking was on the up and up, praised the organization.
"I think it's a real testament to the Mets organization's concern for the health of New Yorkers that they have chosen a sugar-free beverage to celebrate their meaningless award.", said Bloomberg, who then repeated the statement in some of the worse Spanish you've ever heard.
As for the Marlins, they were clearly disappointed as well. "It was a missed opportunity.", said shortstop Jose Reyes. "To see those guys celebrating with the cup...it hurts almost as much as when they started trading away all my teammates."
Mets fans are getting into the act too. Fans began lining up at New York area Modells stores late last night when the company announced it would be receiving Souvenir Cup champions merchandise this morning.
The MLB is hoping the celebration adds a touch of excitement to the end of another lackluster Mets season, but more importantly gives fans a taste of what it might be like if this team ever wins an award that isn't entirely made up.
For now, we can only dream.
