If you want to have an eye-catching essay you need a great prose style, great grammar, great punctuation, great research, and a great sense of formatting—how the essay should look upon the page, how block quotes should be treated, and how sentences work grammatically.
First, you’ll want to make sure you know all the formatting rules that your teacher wants you to follow when writing your essay. Do they want only one inch margins all around the page or do they want the right margin indented one and one half inches? Do they want you to use the typical times New Roman size 12 font or do they have a different font in mind?
Second, you will want to do very good academic research and make certain to cite all your quotes, paraphrases, and any other material taken from other sources, with an APA citation (unless your teacher is using MLA documentation) at the end of the reference. Also, you will want to use research from quality presses, respected academic presses and jounrals. Also, if you are using any books as a part of your research, you will want to make sure that these are taken from respected academic presses, for example, The University of Michigan’s Press.
Simmering is the process of letting an essay sit – at least one night and simmer in its own juices, so to speak. This gives you time to get away from it for a minute and rest your writerly energies and see what it sounds and looks like with some newly rested eyes.
You want to make sure your essay has all necessary elements which may or may not include one or more of the following: page numbering – all except the first page, in the upper right hand corner. You definitely want a title centered, with headers over individual sections to the left. this will create a very eye appealing paper.
Also, your teacher is probably requiring either a title page with your name, the course name, the date, and the title of your paper.
If there’s no title page requirement, you are expected to put this information in the upper left hand corner on page one of your essay.
Also, make sure your essay has introductory, body, and a closing paragraph.
